🗺️ SPY Structure: We Now Sit Between Two Gaps

If you were only looking at one chart today, the hourly is the one.

SPY got taken out to the woodshed this morning; gapping into the open, selling hard from ~740 down to 731.83 (today’s low), and then bouncing. The bounce looked impressive on the 15m. It was not impressive enough.

Why? Because we’ve got two open gaps working as magnetic field boundaries:

🔼 Gap to close: 737.70 -- this is the ceiling. That’s the gap left above from the move down. Price needs to clear this before any bullish thesis gains traction.

🔽 Gap to close: 733.07 / 731.58 -- this is the floor that started the whole conversation. We tagged 731.83 today, came close, and bounced, but we never officially closed that lower gap zone.

So right now SPY is a compressed spring sitting between two magnets. Neither gap has been formally closed. The path of least resistance into tomorrow will likely be determined by which one gets touched first.

🧾 SPY Magic / Trade Review

Let’s be real about what happened today because this is exactly what SPY Magic is for.

The first trade was a straightforward short. Price was extended, flow was printing puts premarket, and the setup was clean going into open.

The second trade was also a short, but this time we had a target: the lower gap fill at 733.07. That’s SPY Magic working. The gap was marked, the thesis was clear, and price kissed 731.83; which is 20 cents from completing the full close.

But here’s the part worth dwelling on: even as we were sitting at 732-range lows, the 735 calls were getting hit on the ask side. Repeatedly. Same strike, same expiry (5/13), same side -- whales were accumulating 1DTE calls into what looked like a waterfall.

That’s not random. That’s someone with a view that this was a flush worth buying. And they were right -- for the bounce.

The hint: When you see aggressive ask-side call accumulation at the lows during what looks like a panic flush, that’s not the time to add shorts. That’s the time to take some off the table and reassess. The whales doing the 735c spam at 08:19 were not wrong about the direction of the next 2 hours.

These were easy reads once you knew what to look for.

Each time SPY had a small dip this morning, all we had to do was wait for the wicking on the hourly to show where a potential bottom was, and look to SPY Magic to confirm direction and give us targets.

A wedge rises. We’ve seen rising wedges break in the opposite direction in this market, to be sure, but we also want to look for signs of strength or weakness in the price action as it rises. Given the ES overnight action, if we get a double top at the high that comes down it makes logical sense to push for that gap fill down to the 730 area.

SPY Magic in the morning: why laddering off the open is the whole game

Since bringing live trading back to The Garden we are now 12 wins and 3 losses on SPY trades. That is not luck. That is a system.

Here is what makes the open so readable with SPY Magic combined with simple price action; when you see multiple orders hitting the same direction in quick succession right at 9:30 and escalating in size, stacking at the same or nearby strikes , that is called laddering. Laddering off the open is one of the clearest tells in the tape. Somebody is building a position in real time and they are not trying to hide it. They want to be in before price confirms the direction and they are willing to keep adding as it moves.

This morning the 723c 5/15 printed four times between 7am and 8am pre-market, all ASK-side, all Repeated Hits, escalating from $114K to $349K. That is a ladder. That is the signal. By the time the open hit we already knew where the conviction was sitting and we traded accordingly.

🎯 how to trade it

The wedge is broken. That changes the game.

When a rising wedge breaks you don’t chase the continuation, you wait for the backtest. Price broke below the lower wedge boundary this morning and we’re now sitting in the 715-717 range which is exactly where the chart annotated a “likely 720 backtest range.” The pattern is simple: find support here, bounce, retest 720. That’s the setup.

The whales are not positioned past 720 right now. Short-dated calls were concentrated at 718-721 all morning. Nobody is loading up for a 725 push today. So we’re not either. Take the bounce to 720, book it, don’t get greedy.

On April 10th, a filter called Ally’s List flagged something quiet on Synaptics. Stock was at $97. Nobody was talking about it. The contract — SYNA 130c 9/18 — was sitting at $1.25 with an OI of just 45. One big print came through. 1,507 contracts, $188K in premium, 100% ASK-side fill. That was it. That was the signal.

Today that contract is at $7.40. That’s nearly a 7 bagger in three weeks on a name that was trading quietly with almost no options activity at all. Next earnings in 3 days.

That last part is the key. Ally’s List does something traditional flow filters can’t. Most flow filters look for unusual activity on stocks that already have active options markets. Ally’s List specifically searches for institutional activity in names with low historic options volume; stocks where options barely trade at all. When someone walks into that market and drops $188K on a 130 strike call with 1,507 contracts against an OI of 45, that’s not noise. That’s someone who knows something and chose a quiet room to say it in.

There is a comet coming.

It’s on the chart. It has levels, it has math, it has a trajectory that anyone with a TradingView account and fifteen minutes could confirm. And yet here we are on a Sunday morning watching the news cycle spin like a fidget spinner made of tariffs and Truth Social posts and things said at 11pm that moved futures two percent before anyone had their coffee.

“We have the best gaps. Nobody makes gaps like us. Beautiful gaps.”

The administration has a gift; not for consistency, not for policy sequencing… but for timing. The announcement lands right when the chart needs it. The pause drops when the level is breaking. The deal gets floated on a Friday afternoon when the weekly close is in danger; and by Monday morning the number that came in negative has a three-minute segment and a chyron that says MARKETS RESILIENT while something important sits quietly below, patient the way gaps always are before they aren’t.

This is not new. The script has been running for months now. GDP prints negative and we talk about the methodology. Inflation stays sticky and we talk about the components. Consumer sentiment hits levels that have historically meant something specific and not good and we talk about whether the survey is partisan. Every bad number comes with an explanation; every good number comes with a press conference. The market, to its credit, doesn’t care about any of this; it cares about what’s priced in, what’s coming, and what got left behind on the way up.

“I didn’t create the gap. The gap was there when I got here.”

What got left behind is the point. When price moves fast…and this market has been moving fast, violently fast, headline-to-headline fast…it creates gaps; zones where the chart essentially skipped a floor, where price never went back to confirm the level, where gravity is still technically owed a visit. They’re not curses. They’re not guaranteed. They’re just math, the same way the comet is just math, and the math says that gaps fill at a much higher rate than people remember when the tape is ripping and the news is good and the chyron says MARKETS RESILIENT.

Somewhere in the pre-market hours, while the recap is still trending, someone is buying long-dated puts on names that have been going straight up. Not panic. Gap insurance, written by people who are still long, still riding it, still happy to wave at the camera, but who also did the math and would like to know where the door is before the comet becomes everyone’s problem at the same time.

The gaps are real; they were there before the headline. They’ll be there after.

In the meantime buy those calls but when it stalls hold onto your balls…and once this all falls for the love of God Don’t. Look. Down.

SPY closed the week at 720 after ripping from 707 on the back of headlines that may or may not reflect signed agreements. The move was fast and it left backtests behind, specifically everything below 716, which is now a gap the chart is owed a visit to at some point. That’s not a prediction. That’s just how gravity works. The 724 highs are the ceiling and they’ve been tested. The 716-715 cluster is the first real floor. Below that it gets religious fast, with monthly levels stacked from 695 all the way down to 674, which is where this whole rally came from.

Bulls need to hold 719.80 to keep the structure clean. Bears need a close below 716.52 to start making a case.

🎯 HOW TO TRADE IT

🐂Bullish: Hold 719.80 at the open Monday and reclaim 720.74. That’s the structure. Target 724.83 on continuation. Don’t chase above 724 without a pullback and retest.

🐻Bearish: Lose 716.52 on a close and the gap fill toward 712 becomes the play. Below 712.03 and you’re looking at 707, which is where this gets interesting. The monthly levels below that aren’t predictions, they’re just there, the way stairs are there when you miss a step.

😕 Neutral: Watch the 716-720 range hold or fail Monday morning. That’s the tell for the week.

Robinhood reported tonight after close. Missed clean. EPS came in at 38 cents against a 43 cent estimate. Revenue was $1.07 billion against $1.18 billion expected. Stock dropped 6% in after hours.

SPY ripped up to 715 on Monday and Tuesday, tagged that gap level at 714.70, and got smacked back. We are now sitting at 711.88, which is right in the middle of the range between 712.93 above and 709.01 below. That 712.93 blue line was support on the way up and is now acting as a lid on the way back down. Price needs to reclaim it and hold it to get another shot at 714.70.

The gap everyone needs to understand is between 709.01 and 708.88. That is a tight cluster of two gap levels sitting right on top of each other, which means if price breaks below and fills that gap it has a clear run to 705.66. That is your stop zone if you are in calls. Below 708.88 and the thesis changes.

🐂 Bullish: Reclaim 712.93 and hold it on the hourly. That is your signal. Calls make sense there with 714.70 as the first target.

Yesterday we gave you two numbers: 714.46 on top, 712.69 on the bottom. That was the whole tape from April 24 through this morning. Up to 714.46, rejected. Back to 712.69, bounced. Up to 714.46, rejected again. Over and over. Same ceiling, same floor, different candles, same result.

That’s not the market being broken. That’s actually it doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. Neither side had enough to break the stalemate so price just kept going back and forth between those two lines until someone blinked.

This morning someone blinked and SPY pushed through 714.46 and tagged 715.21. First time in three days it’s been above that line with any kind of follow through.

Now we wait for the retest. That’s when 714.46 needs to flip from resistance to support; price comes back down, touches it from above, holds it. That’s the confirmation. Without it the break is just a wick above a line and those don’t count.

The market is going up.

It is going up because it went up, and it went up because it is going up, and the going up is the reason for the gone up which is the cause of the going up still. This is not a contradiction. This is April. The bulls who were bears who became bulls when the bears stopped paying rent are now the loudest bulls in the room, which is the most bearish thing a bull can do, but we are not there yet; and, until we are there, we are here.

Which is up.

Earnings are beating because companies are doing well, and companies are doing well because investors are buying, and investors are buying because earnings are beating, and the beating of earnings is the buying of stocks, which are doing well because of companies beating earnings. The circle is a ramp. The ramp is a circle. The difference between a circle and a ramp is that on a ramp you are making money while going in circles, which feels less like circles and more like progress, which is what circles feel like before they stop. Bears who have been short since 6,400 are briefly wondering if they are bulls who haven’t had the intelligence of fortitude to jump on the ramp.

They are not. They are bears. But if you strip the conviction from a bear and the capital from the conviction, a broke bear is just a scared bull, and a scared bull is perhaps the most bearish thing of all. A TransBull.

JPMorgan cut their target to 7,200 last week and raised it to 7,600 this week, having been wrong in one direction and now being right in the other, which is the same as being wrong in the other direction later, which they will also do with equal confidence. Their strategists noted the RSI had exceeded the 95th percentile, which is analyst for this should stop—they raised the target anyway. When the RSI stops, JP and his friend Morgan will note gravely that the RSI has stopped, pause, and issue a new target above wherever it stopped, flagging with fresh alarm that the RSI is now at the 100th percentile, which is analyst for it has stopped, here is a higher number, you are welcome.

Bad news was good news and the bad news now is that good news is good news again, which is bad news for the people who needed bad news to be good news and are now getting good news which feels, to them, like the worst news. $INTC, left for dead at $18, eulogized by every desk on the street, walked into earnings Thursday night and printed $0.29 against an estimate of negative one cent quite alive and well. Three thousand percent. The man showed up to his own funeral, straightened his tie, asked who ordered the cold cuts, and went up 24% before anyone had changed out of their black. The shorts were right for two years and wrong for one session. Two years of right and one day of wrong is, mathematically, expensively, just wrong. Again, any bears left are just scared bulls without horns, conviction or money remaining.

Here is the thing about a ramp that everyone is finally sure is a ramp: you are going to buy the top. You are not a fool, and yet buying the top is, by every available definition, the action of one. The market has noted your intelligence, respected your patience, watched you wait for confirmation, and then made a fool of you anyway, because the only way to avoid buying the top is to buy before it is the top, at which point it is not the top yet, at which point you are not buying the top, and so the market—deeply offended by your actions and yours alone—will make it the top immediately. The certainty you always wanted is the doubt this market always needed.

The position that looks cleanest is the one the chart has been patiently, lovingly, specifically constructing the setup to betray, yours in particular, because yours waited for confirmation, and confirmation is what the top hands out for free right before it hands out something else entirely. Four straight weeks of all-time highs, a JPMorgan upgrade, a 3,000% earnings beat, and that warm spreading feeling that this time is different. That feeling is not insight but is the ticket…and the fool who bought it was you.

So yes, let the ramp ramp and the bulls bull and the bears stare and despair at a market that doesn't care about their perfectly reasoned, thoroughly researched incorrect lair of a bear case. Let JPMorgan raise and rephrase and re-amaze us with a target that's higher than the place they just praised. Let the shorts get long and the longs get longer and the ones who were wrong get a little bit wronger until the wrongness compounds and resounds, and the whole thing comes around to the same bottomed-out ground where were down before the up.

And if you’re truly are a bear and pray each day that we’ll sell, no bullshit transition bullish—then the market’s certain to fail.

SPY closed the week at 714.01, pinned just under the weekly high of 714.53 like a man who ran up four flights of stairs and is now catching his breath at the door. The chart is honest: we ripped from 670 on the 14th to 714 by the 17th, chopped sideways for a week while the market decided whether it believed itself, got spooked into a Thursday wick all the way down to 707, and then reclaimed Friday like nothing happened. That wick matters. It was the market checking whether anyone was actually holding, and the answer, apparently, was yes. SPY wants 720. Until 714.53 breaks and holds, this is a ceiling not a launchpad, and a ceiling kissed twice has feelings about the third visit.
